Artist vs. Entertainer (2021 Music Insight Pt. 2)
I would like to start by saying that we are getting closer and closer to Machine Learning producing music that has the “human” touch. Recurrent Neural Networks fit the task of music generation. For my current project, I will utilize data from Billboard’s Hot 100 weekly charts during the year 2020. For entertainers and artists, understanding some of the biggest influences on culture (music) is absolutely crucial when making songs. It is a music creator’s duty to be responsible with the power that comes with creating music to share.
Where do we draw the line between an artist and an entertainer?
An artist is someone who creates music from a place of vulnerability for the sake of personal expression or to help others. An entertainer makes music for the sake of amusing others without much thought towards how it may impact listeners. It should be stated that one can be professional in both paths but one must be aware of the path that they are on to truly gain all that there is to gain from their path.
Can someone be both?
In terms of living a double life as an artist and entertainer, there is hope. One must discover which they are first. Once that is uncovered, the elements of the other creator can be added. I, for example, am an artist that enjoys entertaining fans. Ultimately, I come back to the solidarity and integrity of music as a vessel of emotional expression . Others can be entertainers with a heightened respect and appreciation of artists while living as a necessary instrument of entertainment.
We live in a beautiful world of technology with many advancements across every industry compared to the previous years of humanity. We also have many issues such as prejudice, violence, disease, misinformation, and the list goes on. With the cutting-edge data analysis and machine learning capability of 2021, we have more of an opportunity than ever before to change Earth for the sake of its inhabitants.
